In mythology Iris is regarded as a messenger goddess. She is said to have angel wings and wear iridescent drops as a gown. Traveling on a rainbow she carries messages from the gods to mortals. The founder of the Iris Trust has firsthand experience of being in an abusive relationship. She finally escaped with her young daughter to a refuge where she stayed for 14 months before being placed in temporary accommodation and subsequently re-housed. Her knowledge of meditation helped her greatly through that difficult period and played a vital part in her recovery from the traumatic experiences she and her daughter had been through. Together with three of the founding Trustees she embarked upon the mission to set up a charity to support women who suffer from the effects of domestic abuse. The Iris Trust was first registered as a charity on 27th July 2007. We can be found on the web site of The Charity Commission. Our main work is providing meditation and relaxation courses for these women. The founders' knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of abusive relationships and the effects this has on one's emotional and mental state of a person are reflected in the course content as well as the difficulties encountered living in a refuge and starting a new life. |
